Latina Power Book

Book Recommendation: Latina Power by Ana Nogales, Ph. D.

Book overview:

In this empowering guide, Dr. Ana Nogales encourages Latinas to move beyond their expected roles and become the women they wish to be by embracing the seven traits they inherit naturally from their Latino culture:

Espíritu Creativo (Creative Spirit)
The Aguantadora's (Survivor's) Passionate Determination
The Comadre's (Girlfriend's) Networking Ability
The Diplomática's (Diplomat's) Discretion
The Atrevida's (Risktaker's) Courage
The Malabarista's (Multitasker's) Balance
La Reina's (A Diva's) Confidence

Each chapter features an interactive element, including a quiz to determine how strong each attribute is in the reader's own personality, plus exercises to reinforce each trait. Filled with the personal stories of successful Latinas, including novelist Isabelle Allende, TV journalist Cristina Saralegui, Congresswomen Loretta and Linda Sánchez, Latina magazine founder Christy Haubegger, and entertainer Jaci Velásquez, Latina Power inspires readers to vigorously pursue their own dreams.

Love this book, but i can proudly say that now is time to pass it on to my daughter and have her read it, this will help her find her path and her lead. Ladies we can do it all, just go for it and remember half of doing is believing you can do it!

Tips For Back To School Time

School bags, school supplies, bus schedules, and after-school activities. Those are just some of the things you think about when gearing up your child for a new successful school year. But what are the most important things parents should focus on to ensure their child has a fun and productive 2011/12 school year.

Tip 1: Filling the lunch box with food for thought

With childhood obesity a continuing concern, experts say what you put in your child’s lunch box is more important than ever. “A healthy lunch not only keeps the body going but also the brain,” “Kids who eat regular healthy meals often do better in school.”

Tip 2: Read With Your Children

Reading is one of the best ways to keep a child’s mind sharp when they aren’t in school. There are many ways to integrate reading into your daily lives, including spending a little time each night reading together before your child’s bed time- this will also help your children get on to a regular bedtime schedule. Other activities include spending the afternoon at your local library or bookstore. Often kids get really excited when they get their own, and are able to use their own library cards.

Tip 3: Make Sure Your Child Gets Enough Sleep

Kids need their rest to perform well at school. Follow their practical tips for setting your kids ‘back to school sleep clocks’ at least two weeks before the school year begins. As research keeps telling us, a big contributor for children’s success at school is determined by whether they are getting enough sleep at night.

Tip 4: Emphasize The Positive And Have Fun!

Kid’s pick up on their parents attitudes. If a parent complains about shopping for back-to-school clothes and supplies, they’ll pick up on it, so start their school year off positively to get them motivated for the great year ahead. Part of the fun of parenting and teaching is figuring out what excites children. Children should understand that learning isn’t a ‘job’ that ends on graduation day, it’s something that we all do every day for life and it is enjoyable!

Tip 5: Hobbies.

It’s important to remind your children that they’ll still have free time after school and on weekends. If they played most of the day during the summer, they’ll still have plenty of playtimes after school lets out. The hobbies that they enjoyed during the summer can continue on through the school year.

Tip 6: Don’t Wear Them Out

It’s important to keep kids active, however signing them up for too many sports teams, dance practises, piano lessons, and tutoring won’t give them the downtime that they need. Let them play. Let them sit around and say ‘I’m bored’ every once in a while. School should be children’s main priority and biggest responsibility, and so it’s worthwhile to limit their extra-curricular activities especially during the school year. As they get older, maybe they will show that they can handle more, but monitor how they are handling everything closely.

Jlo Clothing Line

Sneak Peek At J. Lo's Clothing Line For Kohl's

Newly single Jennifer Lopez has debuted her lookbook for her Fall 2011 collection for Kohl's, and despite experiencing a big hurdle recently (Ahem, Marc Anthony), J.Lo has finally decided to show off her work as a fashion designer.

According to The Huffington Post, the clothing line was supposed to be a collaboration between J.Lo and ex-husband Marc Anthony, but after their high-profile divorce, Kohl's thought it was best (naturally) to have the ex-couple design 2 separate collections.

The Jennifer Lopez Collection for Kohl's is very feminine indeed and is inspired by Old Hollywood, according to The Budget Babe. There are plenty of looks that J'Lo would wear herself, including some of her favorite fashion staples, such as jumpsuits, sky-high heels, and off-the-shoulder tops, with plenty of faux fur, faux snakeskin, leopard-print, and shiny embellishments to go around.

J'Lo's collection (and Marc Anthony's funny enough) will hit stores and Kohls.com on September 7.

Take a peek at the Jennifer Lopez Collection for Kohl's after the jump!

Learning How To Pack Light & Look Fabulous

I'll admit it. I'm what you would call a "girly-girl". I like to dress up, I'm most comfortable in heels, and, ironically, I don't feel quite myself when I'm not wearing at least a little makeup (and yes, I am fully aware of how ridiculous that is). I need to be prepared for any situation and, frankly, we just have way more options than you men. But, if you're lugging your own suitcase, those few extra pairs of shoes get old really quickly. Here's my top five tips for packing a bag full of style that YOU can actually carry. Nothing is more relaxing than a summer vacation, but nothing is more stressful than wondering what to pack. Below are a few tips that can help you.

1. Load up on accessories.Accessories can instantly dress up any outfit and they're light. So, go ahead and go overboard packing earrings, jewelry, and things for your hair. You won't regret having plenty of choices.

2. Limit your shoes.
This is very hard for me to say but shoes are the easiest thing to pack incorrectly. It's tempting to bring those cute strappy heels, but be realistic. If you're walking a lot, you're not going to be wearing those shoes. I can't count how many times I've packed a bunch of shoes, only to wear one or two pairs the entire trip. If you want something fancy, choose your most versatile black heels. And if you still feel like you need more options find a cute flat or (flip flop for those that like them to walk around, this is a fashion no no) that will at least take up less room, I am not a flip flop girl but I do know that many Americans are.

3.Think Small with Makeup.
Another case where it's easy to overdo is with your makeup. Pack your gear for your daily routine, add an extra eyeshadow and call it a day. If you can downsize your makeup, do it.

4. Bags and Purses.

Just like shoes, it's easy to pack too many purses ( I have this syndrome). Our rule of thumb is to stick with two basics: a large purse that can double as a carry on bag and a small black bag for nights out on the town. Think about your plans and pack what you think will work best. And again, if you can't resist an extra bag....make sure it's small!

Hope you can take few of these tips and apply them to your next vacation. I am trying to learn and following some guidelines. I am a packer!
